Pencil Flags

I already finished a truckload of
Pocket Wreath Paperclip Bookmark Pins for my mom.
But it is a bit early for Christmas.
This is a last minute idea that can be used for Halloween or Thanksgiving or just about any time.
She always enjoys giving little items
to the patients where she works.
These little flags can fit over your
pencils or pens.
They can be plain or have small
appliques (sewn or glued on).
Some ideas for a holiday applique
might be:
pumpkin, bat, heart, flower, leaf, snowman, Santa face, 4-leaf clover, Sun-face with Rays.
You might also put a short name or Initial on it.

they would make cute party favors.
The basic flag is very easy and can
be made in about 10 minutes.

mm / D hook
~ 6 yds of medium
worsted weight
Red
Heart or Sugar n Cream: Various colors
Optional: An applique and Invisible Thread or Permanent Fabric Glue (to attach it)
Gauge: 5
sc and 5 Rnds = ~ 1”
Not crucial.
Size: 3”
x 3” (7.6 cm x 7.6 cm). Fits over a pencil or pen.
Different yarns can yield
different sizes.
Be sure that the stitches are
tight enough to hold the flag out.
Pattern Notes: For fatter-sized pens or pencils,
you can increase the Ch-5-Loops in Row 11.
PENCIL FLAG:
Row 1: Ch 11, Sc in the
back-bump-ridge of the 2nd ch from the hook and each ch across. (10 sc)
Row 2: Ch 1 and
turn. Dec, Sc in next 6 sts, Dec.
(8)
Row 3: Ch 1 and
turn. Sc across. (8)
Row 4: Ch 1 and
turn. Dec, Sc in next 4 sts, Dec. (6)
Row 5: Ch 1 and turn. Sc across. (6)
Row 6: Ch 1 and
turn. Dec, Sc in next 2 sts, Dec. (4)
Row 7: Ch 1 and
turn. Sc across. (4)
Row 8: Ch 1 and turn. (Dec)
2 times. (2)
Row 9: Ch 1 and turn. Sc across. (2)
Row 10: Ch 1 and
turn. Dec. (1)
Row 11: (Work edging around the right side)
Ch 1 and turn. Sc in each of the 10 rows down the side.
Note: 1st stitch will
be the sc from row 10.
2 Sc in the
corner st along the beg chs, Ch 5 (first loop for pencil), Sc again in the same
st.
Work over beg yarn end to eliminate weaving
it in later.
Sc in next
8 sts (along the beg-ch).
Sc in the
next corner st, Ch 5 (second loop for pencil), 2 Sc again in the same st.
Sc the across
the 10 rows of the next side.
Join with
a ss to the first sc. FO and weave in.
